Rear belly tube. 8h

The rear belly tube was bent, and not in a good condition. It takes a lot of stress, since it has tree mounting holes in the rear, the engine/wing struts, the floats, and the lower boom tube that runs back to the tail wheel. I changed the tube, and inserted reinforcement aluminium tube all the way through the belly tube.

Realising the use of a blog.

I am a busy man. Doing a lot of things and sometimes to many things for my own good. I want to write a diary like a blog. It is a good watford me to give the day a reflection. But, I don’t seem to get me thumb out to do it. The time is not with me and the blog is not a priority. Since I am rebuilding my aeroplane, I need to document the process. So that I have to do. So I have decided to use this blog as a aeroplane rebuilding log, until I get my thumb out and start using the blog more often.
So see you at the Stenhammar airplane workshop in Möllebjörke.

Fabric testing

Today I decided to test the wing fabric on my plane. The fabric is made of dacron sail fabric. Polyester fabric. It is strong and light. But it is sensitive to UV deteration from the sun. The wing is painted whit a paint mixed whit aluminium paste. Still it ages, depending on how many hours it has been in the sun.
In my bible, Ac43-13, it is described how to test the fabric. I had to cut out a piece of the top wing, clean the test piece, and clamp it in the ends. Then I used some weights and started to load the fabric until it broke.

image

One piece from the top of the wing and one from the bottom. The top piece is weakened, but it has to be able to take a load of 35lb/inch (15kg/25,4mm) to pass the test.
It did pass the test. I was able to load 19kg before it snapped of.

And here it is breaking on 19kg load.

I can fly safe with these sails. I just need to repair the holes.

Getting started on the AKKA

In the middle of moving and wedding planning, I had the urge to start rebuilding my plane. I have been looking around on the internet trying to find information about this plane. I found out that this bird was renamed in the late -90 to the T-bird. The Tierra Owners had changed to Golden Circle Inc and year 2005 Indy aircraft took over the constructions. This manufacturer seem to have a lot if issues, they require the customer to buy stuff from them for at least 1000 dollar before even answering the phone or mail. I think I will manage without those people. one site I found helpful is the yahoo t-bird group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tbird-ul/ The Terratorn Tierra assy manual was available there. A lot of god pictures is uploaded on the site.

So, I teared down the old cabin sail (it is not glued, only tied to the frame). I hope the sailmaker want to make a new one for me. The doors is old plexiglas and has gotten yellow. I am going to buy new UV stable 2mm polycarbonate glas ak. makrolon/lexan and build new doors. The roof glas is ok I think.

Next I need to get the engine inside. I want to rebuild it. I have taken pictures of every step, but I have not enough spece on the blog for it. Maybe I will buy more space on wordpress later.

Hopefully, I can start working on the project in september after we got married. I think the pictures will help others who are doing the same thing. I actualy got a CD full of rebuilding picures from a fellow in USA, for free! Sometimes you actualy meet friendly people out there. Thank you Dough! I will ask him if I am alowed to post some of his pictures here.

This sunday I took some time to work on the AKKA2. I have ordered some new tubes. Bottom rear boom tube and rear support tubes. The old bottom tube had a ugly dent underneath. The support tubes was scuffed by the rudder steel wires. I will mount a nylon block on the tail boom to run the steel wires thru.

This homemade piece of shit on the tail is going. It’s heavy and unnecessary.

I am going to buy a lot of new AN-bolts.
image

This mess will be nice to clean up.

The Tierra steering yoke is like a I. Maybe I will mount a Tbird yoke that is like a T.

The instruments. I am going to buy modern engine electronic instruments. But the airspeed meter is going to be a analog traditional one in hi quality.

It will be interesting to get my hands on the electrics.

The ailerons bellcrank on the roof.

Next time I will have it apart. And start the paint stripping.

Got some work done on my plane.
I found a tube that was a knick on it and bent. I have asked the tierra yahoo group for help. But I will of course change the tube anyway. I noticed that all the tube ends need reinforcement. So I will probably plug the ends with some light plastic material and spray the inside of the tube whit dinitrol anticorrosion grease. The main landing gear square tube need some welding att the end because a crack. It needs plugs to. There are some AN bolts who need to be replaced to. This is fun!

Buying my own airplane

As long as I remember, I have been dreaming of building and flying my own airplane. I have stayed down on the ground until I took the step and got a ultralight pilot certificate year 2008.  Just about the same y´time as girls started to be a little interesting, I bought my first radio controlled model airplane. So my life has been quit formed by airplanes. But do not be mistaken, I do know so little about airplane names and history. I have only special knowledge about some types, and more like general knowledge and understanding about airplanes and maintenance. I am a A&P (airframe & poweplant) flight technician. And I am a special officer in the Swedish air force primarily doing maintenance on the JAS39C7D Gripen fighter jet. And of course, I am a crazy fellow loving to dig my self into technical stuff. R/C helicopters, R/C airplanes, Ultralights, Airplanes, Some Weapons, Old Cars , House building, Electronics, Wood Working and a lot more.

So, what about building an airplane? I realize that building one from scratch will take me to long time. Considering everything I do, I do not have time to focus on one thing so long. That`s why I bought a old one, that needs rebuilding. I have all the parts, the plane is realy ready to be repaired, perfect! Why did I buy it now? I have been waiting to long for stuff to happen… It never happen by it self! Time to get started and not wait for better times! I built my first workshop for two years ago, now I have to sell it because of  family stuff. I did not get the chance to use it. OK, get over it and get started! I will build an other at my new place and fulfill my dreams. I just is`t easy to make stuff work… So what?

The ad at blocket.se

My head and heart is full whit motivation and I want to get started right away. My father in law called me and gave me a tip about a airplane he has seen on the buy and sell site http://www.blocket.se . It seem to be a nice airplane, and the price was quite low. The Plane was a old Tierra/AKKA two seater from 1985. After some late nights on google, I called the seller and asked if I and my belowed fiance could come and take a look. My birthday was that on saturday and I asked my better half to give me the trip as a birthday present.  We brought my friends car trailer and went 500km to take a look at an airplane. I have a wonderful and understanding fiance.  The seller was a man with a lot of stuff on his mind, and so was his place. The airplane was hangared since he bought it, and the poor AKKA had not seen light in 12 years, something that I liked. Sunlight is not good for an airplane covered in sails. I managed to lower the price from 39 000kr to 29 000kr and i got airplane pregnant. It took us 6 hours to get the plane on the trailer, and off we go! It took us two days to drive home due to the storm… Dam those who gives up!

We got the plane inside the hangar at the flight club http://www.blekingefk.se and whent home for dreaming and planing. Beside this we are planning our wedding, selling our house, mowing to an other and trying to live our lifes. The AKKA had to whait some. To get me going I am listening to this wonderful song; Building an aeroplane  by Jenny Langlo http://youtu.be/syFjT3u24Ts
